Hungarian Transport Ministry launches review of Trieste port venture with Italy
The Ministry of Transport and Investment has begun a detailed assessment of Hungary's planned sea port in Trieste, with any further action to follow the review.
Hungary's plan to create its own sea port in Trieste was sanctioned in 2018, granting a 60-year concession for a former industrial area. The scheme calls for a 250-metre initial quay, later expanded to a total of 650 metres, plus a 30-hectare logistics complex. Work began in early 2026, with a new breakwater erected and dredging underway, supported by more than 20 billion forints from the Italian side.
The state-owned Adria Port Zrt. is the developer, and the project has already accumulated a financial shortfall. The Ministry of Transport and Investment has now taken over the review, scrutinising the project's viability before any further steps are taken.
Why it matters
The outcome will shape Hungary's export capacity and its economic partnership with Italy.
