Hungarian Treasury reports surge in retail bond holdings and new account openings

The Hungarian State Treasury says more than 1.2 million clients now hold government bonds, while the total value of those bonds has passed a record high. About 80 000 new securities accounts were opened this year.

According to the Treasury, the number of individuals with bond investments has exceeded 1.2 million and the overall portfolio now tops a historic level. In 2024, roughly 80 000 people opened either a regular securities account or a child-focused Start account. The Treasury manages 463 000 Start accounts for minors. The value of client-held bonds grew by nearly 2 000 billion forints during the year, and about 70 percent of all retail forint and foreign-currency bonds are kept in Treasury-run accounts. Most transactions and two-thirds of new accounts are processed online.

Why it matters

The growth shows rising public participation in government debt markets and a shift toward digital financial services in Hungary.
