Hungary and Greece pledge joint action on illegal migration and sports cooperation

Hungarian interior minister Pósfai Gábor met Greek counterparts in Athens, agreeing to deepen cooperation on curbing illegal migration and promoting regular physical activity.

Hungarian interior minister Pósfai Gábor travelled to Athens for talks with Greek migration and asylum minister Athanasios Plevris and education, religion and sports minister Ioannis Vroutsis. The three officials focused first on the migration challenges facing both countries and the EU, agreeing that Hungary and Greece will do everything possible to curb illegal migration, protect internal security and improve control of the Union’s external borders.

They emphasized the need for innovative, practical EU mechanisms to aid member states during acute migration flows. In addition, the ministers discussed how Hungary could most effectively support Greece’s border-administration and migration-management tasks. Vroutsis and Plevris also highlighted a shared goal of making regular physical activity a routine part of daily life, linking it to Greece’s priority sport policy for its next EU presidency and considering sustainable models for sports infrastructure. Both sides pledged to maintain regular bilateral consultations in the identified areas.

Why it matters

The agreement could shape EU migration policy and enhance border security while promoting public health through sport.
