Hungary expands home energy storage scheme, cuts per-household subsidy
The government will increase the number of winners in the Home Energy Storage Program while keeping the total budget unchanged and lowering the individual grant for storage-only projects.
Hungary’s Home Energy Storage Program (OETP) will admit additional applicants, raising the pool of potential winners while the overall funding ceiling stays the same. Applicants can still receive up to 2.5 million for projects that pair a solar array with a battery of at least 10 kWh, but households installing only a storage unit will now be eligible for a lower grant. State Secretary András Tótth said the reduction mirrors recent declines in battery costs and a stronger forint.
The ministry also plans to tighten the list of approved installers and require bank guarantees instead of advance payments. The program’s deadline has been moved from September 2026 to February 2027, prompting debate over its impact on already notified winners.
