Hungary renames counties and commuter passes as 'megye' from October 1
From October 1 Hungary’s counties will again be called megye, and the vármegyebérlet ticket will be renamed megyebérlet; existing passes stay valid.
A law passed on September 8 restores the historic county name megye, replacing vármegyék, and changes the public-transport season ticket name from vármegyebérlet to megyebérlet. The modification is purely nominal; tickets issued before the change remain usable, while new purchases will carry the updated label. MÁV-csoport CEO Hegyi Zsolt confirmed the rollout, and the reform also re-establishes the főispánok as government appointees.
