Hungary says Austria lodged EU complaint over Paks weir, Vienna refutes filing
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar claimed Austria filed a complaint in Brussels over the emergency weir near the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, but Austria says it has not lodged a formal complaint, only voiced concerns through EU channels.
After an exceptionally dry summer forced the Paks Nuclear Power Plant to cut output, Hungary approved an emergency bottom weir on the Danube to raise water levels around the plant’s intake. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar asserted that Austria had filed a complaint in Brussels over this structure, praising the weir as essential for uninterrupted operation. The Austrian Ministry of Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure responded that no formal complaint was lodged, but that it has raised the matter with the European Commission and the non-EU Danube Commission.
Representatives of countries involved in the EU Strategy for the Danube Region have drafted a joint position, which was sent to Transport Minister Dávid Vitézy and Magyar. While the weir helped restore the plant to full capacity, Austria’s involvement remains limited to diplomatic discussions, and no infringement procedure has been initiated by the European Commission.
