Høyre leader rejects fuel tax cuts, pushes for permanent tax relief

Ine Eriksen Søreide, leader of Høyre, refused to back proposals to lower fuel taxes, despite pressure from Frp, Sp and KrF, and called for lasting tax cuts instead.

Ine Eriksen Søreide, the head of Høyre, announced that the party will not join calls to re-introduce fuel-tax cuts, a proposal championed by the Progress Party, Centre Party and Christian Democratic Party. She emphasized that citizens and firms need more than short-term measures, proposing instead enduring tax reductions that would leave more money in private hands and provide predictability. Søreide criticized the idea of tweaking tax and duty levels within the budget process, describing it as insecure economic governance.

She also suggested that the opposition’s strategy is to vote for unfavorable budgets while avoiding responsibility afterward. Her position faces strong internal pressure from Høyre members and municipal leaders in rural districts who are urging a reversal.

Why it matters

The decision shapes Norway's tax policy and affects household and business finances.
