Høyre leader warns of Russian AI-driven disinformation campaigns on social media
Høyre chair Ine Eriksen Søreide says Russia is using bots and AI to spread pro-Russian content and sow division in Norway, and the party has reported the activity to the National Security Authority.
Høyre’s leader Ine Eriksen Søreide cautioned that Russian influence operations now extend beyond military aggression, using bots and AI-generated posts to infiltrate Norwegian social-media streams. She explained that the party has identified a marked increase in hostile, algorithm-driven comments whenever Høyre expresses support for Ukraine, and these findings have been reported to the Nasjonal sikkerhetsmyndighet. According to Søreide, other parties are experiencing comparable tactics, which aim to create political unrest across Europe.
She emphasized that the threat is daily and invisible to most users, urging both citizens and lawmakers to act. The party has also put forward a proposal to tighten Norway’s espionage laws, arguing current police resources are insufficient to counter the digital campaign.
Why it matters
Russian AI-driven disinformation could undermine Norway’s democratic debate and its support for Ukraine.
