Hyundai Inster review: compact EV blends quirky design with practical features

The Hyundai Inster is a small electric car that offers distinctive styling, flexible seating and a decent range, though its price climbs sharply for higher trims.

Hyundai’s Inster brings a bold, boxy aesthetic to the micro-electric-vehicle market, highlighted by round headlights and upright body panels that give it a strong street presence. Inside, the four-seat cabin makes efficient use of space, with rear seats that slide and recline for either adult legroom or increased cargo capacity, and front seats that fold flat. The car is offered with either a 42 kWh or a 49 kWh battery, the latter promising an official range of up to 229 miles on smaller wheels, though real-world mileage will drop in cold weather and at motorway speeds.

Standard equipment includes two 10.25-inch displays, navigation, climate control and adaptive cruise control, while the higher-spec 02 trim adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and the versatile rear seats. Driving dynamics are comfortable for city use, though the suspension can be unsettled on rough surfaces and steering feedback is modest. Prices begin at £22,995 and can rise close to £30,000 with options, positioning the Inster against a crowded field of affordable electric cars.

Why it matters

The Inster shows how manufacturers can combine distinctive design with practical features in the growing compact EV market.
