Hyundai IONIQ 5 remains a compelling EV choice despite higher price
The Hyundai IONIQ 5, starting at £40,695 in the UK, offers up to 354 miles of WLTP range and fast 800 V charging, making it a strong contender in the mid-range electric-car market.
Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 continues to stand out in the electric-vehicle segment, with a base price of £40,695 and options that reach £50,255 for the Ultimate trim. The 84 kWh battery version offers the longest official WLTP range at 354 miles and benefits from an 800 V system that can accept up to 260 kW of rapid power, reducing charging stops on long trips. Inside, a 3,000 mm wheelbase and flat floor create a roomy cabin, delivering 520 litres of luggage space that can be expanded to 1,580 litres when rear seats are folded.
Standard equipment across all models includes a heat pump, heated seats and steering wheel, and dual 12.3-inch screens, while higher trims add features such as a head-up display and digital rear-view mirror. The car’s price places it above the £37,000 government EV grant limit and, for models over £50,000, adds a £440-per-year road-tax surcharge, which can raise total ownership costs. Competing against the Kia EV6, Tesla Model Y and Skoda Enyaq, the IONIQ 5’s blend of fast charging, interior flexibility and distinctive design keeps it a viable option for families and company-car users.
