Hyundai Motor Group set to overtake Ford in U.S. quarterly sales
Hyundai Motor Group is projected to sell more cars than Ford in the United States for the July-September quarter, marking its first quarterly lead over the American automaker.
According to Cox Automotive, Hyundai Motor Group’s three brands - Hyundai, Kia and Genesis - are on track to deliver 511,421 vehicles in the United States during the July-September period, up 6.5% year over year. Ford Motor’s projected sales of 504,172 units represent a 7.1% decline, positioning Hyundai Motor Group ahead of Ford for the first quarterly comparison. The Korean conglomerate would then sit third in U.S. sales behind General Motors (671,706) and Toyota (642,707).
Analysts attribute the gain to stronger consumer preference for hybrids and other fuel-efficient cars amid high gasoline prices, a segment where Hyundai’s lineup is expanding while Ford’s offerings remain limited. Cox Automotive executive Erin Keating noted that Asian manufacturers are gaining traction thanks to their diverse hybrid portfolios. This development underscores the changing dynamics of the U.S. auto market.
Why it matters
The shift signals a growing preference for fuel-efficient vehicles and reshapes the competitive hierarchy of the U.S. auto market.
