Hyundai Rotem to buy Hyundai Wia's defense arm for 358.4 billion won
Hyundai Rotem announced it will purchase Hyundai Wia's defense division for 358.4 billion won to expand its weapons manufacturing capabilities.
Hyundai Rotem Co., the defence subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, disclosed plans to buy Hyundai Wia Co.'s defence business for 358.4 billion won (about US$252 million). The acquisition will add production of critical components for the K9 self-propelled howitzer and the K2 main battle tank to Rotem's portfolio, strengthening its competitiveness in the global arms market. The move comes after Rotem secured a $6.5 billion contract to deliver K2 tanks to Poland and a comprehensive deal with Peru for 195 ground-weapon systems, including 54 tanks.
Hyundai Wia will divest the defence unit as part of a broader restructuring aimed at shifting toward electric-vehicle parts, software-defined vehicles, thermal-management systems and robotics. The transaction reflects Hyundai Motor Group's strategy to separate defence manufacturing from its next-generation automotive initiatives.
Why it matters
The purchase consolidates South Korea's defence manufacturing and funds Hyundai Wia's shift to future mobility tech.
