IAEA chief predicts nuclear power could exceed threefold growth by 2060

Rafael Grossi told the UN that nuclear electricity generation may more than triple by 2060, driven by rising demand, AI data centres and tech firms seeking clean power.

Speaking to the United Nations, IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi projected that nuclear power’s contribution to electricity could increase by over three times by 2060, citing the growing need for reliable, carbon-free energy from AI-driven data centres and technology companies. He pointed out that in 2025, more than 400 reactors across 30 nations generated roughly 10% of the world’s electricity and a quarter of its low-carbon supply, with over 60 additional reactors under construction.

Grossi stressed that nuclear energy now rivals solar in security and safety, and that future capacity estimates have risen sharply. He also addressed geopolitical tensions, calling the war in Ukraine an unprecedented threat to nuclear safety and noting concerns about Iran’s nuclear negotiations and North Korea’s expanding program. Additionally, he reported progress in clarifying Syria’s past nuclear activities after engagement with interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa.

Why it matters

The forecast signals a major shift toward nuclear energy, affecting global energy security, climate goals and geopolitical dynamics.
