Iași Mayor Mihai Chirica Questioned Again in Păcura Corruption Probe
Mayor Mihai Chirica was summoned by anti-corruption prosecutors in Iași for a second hearing on the Păcura case, which may now list him as a suspect.
On Tuesday, DNA prosecutors held a further interview with Iași Mayor Mihai Chirica, who earlier had appeared only as a witness in the Păcura investigation. Sources close to the case say Chirica has now been told he may be indicted for alleged mismanagement of a substantial fuel reserve that vanished from CET Iași depots. The probe, which also examined a payment for non-existent fuel, has prompted DNA raids on the city hall and multiple heating-system companies since December 2024.
Chirica told investigators that the inquiry centers on a “dilemma” about the state fuel reserve and that he has supplied all requested documents, including records of fuel movement. He emphasized that expert analyses are underway to trace the missing fuel. The investigation also seeks personnel files and contracts for staff responsible for the 2021-2022 storage period.
Why it matters
The case could implicate a major municipal leader in a large-scale fuel misappropriation, affecting public trust and local energy supplies.
