Ibiza moves to ban new nightclubs amid tourism overload and local backlash

Ibiza’s regional government announced that the PIAT plan will bar the issuance of any new nightclub licences, a step it says is needed to limit the island’s over-tourism and protect local resources. The measure targets venues such as Ushuaïa, Hï and the hyperclub UNVRS, all linked to the Matutes family’s real-estate empire and the creative firm The Night League run by French impresario Yann Pissenem. Vice-president Mariano Juan (PP) wants the draft ready before the May 2027 elections, while PSOE spokesperson Elena López calls the plan essential after years of unchecked growth.

Industry representatives, including Ocio de Ibiza manager José Luis Benítez, acknowledge the sector’s contribution of about 35 % of the island’s GDP and €160 million in ticket revenue, but warn that further expansion could jeopardise the “golden egg” of the island’s economy. Critics such as DJ Igor Marijuan and club owner Pepe Roselló argue the ban favours a handful of elite venues and harms smaller operators, while local residents like Alberto Sánchez Runde contest illegal relocations of clubs such as Lío Ibiza. The debate highlights a tension between preserving Ibiza’s global nightlife reputation and ensuring sustainable tourism for its communities.
