IBM adds AI-driven Serve Quality and personalized updates to U.S. Open app
IBM and the United States Tennis Association have introduced new AI-powered tools, including a Serve Quality metric, to enhance the U.S. Open digital experience.
During this year’s U.S. Open in Queens, IBM and the United States Tennis Association rolled out a suite of AI-enhanced functionalities for the tournament’s app and website. A redesigned Live Updates page lets users select favorite players and receive tailored match information. The headline innovation, Serve Quality, uses IBM Bob’s limb-tracking and Confluent’s data pipeline to evaluate 21 joint points on a player’s body, generating a real-time quality score across all 254 singles matches.
The app also adds a "Key Moments" feature that builds on the popular Likelihood to Win metric by incorporating media, social, and injury data. Finally, an upgraded Match Chat, powered by watsonx Orchestrate, offers instant answers on everything from serve analysis to name pronunciation. IBM’s vice president of sports and entertainment partnerships, Kameryn Stanhouse, highlighted the goal of delivering a personalized, second-screen experience for the estimated one million on-site spectators and 14 million remote viewers.
Why it matters
The AI tools give tennis fans deeper, real-time insights, making the sport more engaging for both stadium attendees and remote viewers.
