ICE accelerated hiring and cut training, sparking whistleblower concerns over security risks

A senior ICE official filed a whistleblower complaint alleging that the agency hired hundreds of agents without completing background checks, creating serious national-security concerns.

In an effort to meet the former president’s immigration agenda, ICE more than doubled its workforce, hiring thousands of new agents in a short period. A veteran officer, who oversaw the recruitment of hundreds of applicants, warned that the agency eliminated credit checks, fingerprint verification, and other vetting steps, while also cutting the standard ten-week training to six weeks. He filed a whistleblower memo with the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General, alleging illegal shortcuts and heightened security risks.

Acting Director Todd Lyons later ordered an internal audit, yet no results have been made public. Former ICE instructor Ryan Schwank testified that the rushed training was “deficient, defective, and broken,” and Senator Gary Peters expressed ongoing concerns about the agency’s recruitment standards. Recent incidents, such as the killing of two bystanders in Minneapolis by federal agents, underscore the potential consequences of the compromised hiring process.
