ICE detains nearly 2,200 undocumented migrants in New York, including convicted murderers and rapists

Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced that “Operation Rotten Apple” detained approximately 2,200 undocumented migrants throughout New York during a month-long campaign, according to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. Those taken into custody include Bogdan Detrovich Gren, a Ukrainian national with convictions for kidnapping, weapon possession and murder; Andreas Bernal Chiquito, a Colombian with prior arrests for child sexual conduct; Palvinder Singh, an Indian who was convicted of rape in Germany; and Carlos Mendez-Acosta, a Venezuelan rapist.

Mullin claimed the operation made the Empire State safer and called on state and local politicians to work with federal authorities. The sweep follows an executive order by Mamdani that reinforced sanctuary protections and legislation championed by Governor Hochul that bars ICE agents from many public venues. Critics such as former Trump administration border czar Tom Homan argue that New York’s sanctuary policies have released criminal aliens back onto the streets.
