ICE seeks to keep illegal immigrant charged in fatal Maryland wrong-way crash detained

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on Jose Antonio Caballero-Nolasco, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, after he was charged with multiple vehicular homicide offenses for a wrong-way, alcohol-impacted crash on Interstate 270 in Maryland. The collision on August 29 resulted in the deaths of Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, and her 23-year-old daughter Areebah Jahin, both residents of Northern Virginia, while a 62-year-old man and an 8-year-old girl survived and were hospitalized.
Police observed the driver reeking of alcohol, noted bloodshot eyes, and heard slurred speech, with empty and full beer bottles found in the vehicle. Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy confirmed the presence of alcohol, and the suspect was initially taken to a local hospital before being transferred to the Montgomery County Detention Center. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin emphasized that the detainer aims to prevent the suspect’s release back onto the streets.
