On August 29, Iceland held a referendum in which 52.8% of participants voted against resuming negotiations for EU membership, a process that had been paused since 2015. The island nation, already part of the Schengen Area and the European Economic Area, expressed contentment with its existing relationship with the bloc. Central to the decision was the protection of its fishing sector, which supplies about 20% of exports and remains a core element of sovereignty.
Memories of historic “cod wars” and the prospect of sharing fish stocks with the EU discouraged support. Additionally, Icelanders cited NATO membership as a reliable security guarantee amid an uncertain geopolitical climate. The result dampens EU hopes for a showcase success in the Arctic and may affect neighboring countries' considerations of EU membership.
