Iceland supermarket to open first UK high-street store in Falkland Islands

Iceland has confirmed that it will open a supermarket in Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands, in early December, working together with local retailer Kelper Stores. This will be the first presence of a UK high-street chain in the British overseas territory. Richard Walker, the executive chair, expressed pride in supporting the islands and said he will travel there to inaugurate the store.

The launch comes shortly after Argentine President Javier Milei intensified Buenos Aires’ claims over the islands and cited a US re-evaluation of its historic stance. Milei also warned of sanctions against oil companies drilling in the area, naming Israeli firm Navitas Petroleum. Meanwhile, a joint venture to build a salmon farm by Fortuna and Denmark’s F-land ApS faces local resistance, with the group Salmon Free Falklands calling for a referendum.
