Iconic Fifth Avenue Golden-Dome Penthouse Sells for $9 Million After Price Slash

The landmark two-floor penthouse atop the Sohmer Piano Building on Fifth Avenue sold for $9 million, a 64% drop from its original $25 million asking price.

The famed golden-dome penthouse occupying the top two floors of the Sohmer Piano Building at 170 Fifth Avenue has finally changed hands, fetching $9 million from buyer White Piano LLC. Listed initially at $25 million in November 2024, the 5,700-square-foot duplex saw its price cut to $14.9 million and lingered on the market for 530 days before an auction secured a winning bid of $8.25 million, later announced as $10.147 million.

The sale marks a 64% reduction from the original asking price and is only slightly above the $7.2 million Greg Carr paid for the raw space in 2001. Carr, a former tech entrepreneur, will donate the entire sale amount to the Gorongosa Project, supporting wildlife conservation in Mozambique. Sotheby’s brokers Claire Groome and Lawrence Treglia emphasized the property’s unique features, including over 40 oversized windows, an 80-foot greenhouse-style window wall, a circular limestone staircase, and a private roof deck with city views. Concierge Auctions CEO Chad Roffers praised the auction format for delivering a timely, competitive sale for the historic landmark.

Why it matters

The sale illustrates how even iconic luxury properties can face steep price cuts and highlights a high-profile donation to wildlife conservation.
