IE Business School profiles ABB Bank's digital and agile transformation
IE Business School has turned ABB Bank's multi-year digital overhaul into a case study, highlighting its AI-driven growth and agile restructuring.
IE Business School has produced a new case study, “ABB Bank's Next Frontier: Choosing the Scope and Path of Growth,” authored by Professor Antonio Zabaleta Moreno. The material follows ABB Bank’s transformation from 2016, emphasizing its digital modernization, agile adoption and AI-centric growth plans. Key metrics show mobile-banking users swelling from about 171,000 in 2020 to 2.6 million in 2025, while the bank’s app rating climbed from 1.2 to 4.9 and its digital Net Promoter Score rose from 48 to 77.
The agile overhaul now runs 14 domains and more than 80 squads, slashing new-product development time from 243 days to 59 days. The case also highlights the ABB Tech Academy, launched in 2019, which has graduated over 1,113 participants, 83 % of whom found jobs. Future priorities identified are broader AI use, market expansion, enhanced digital capabilities and the rollout of lifestyle-focused services.
Why it matters
The study showcases a successful digital and agile overhaul in Azerbaijan’s banking sector, offering a model for other institutions.
