IEA Highlights Philippines' Accelerating Shift Toward Renewable Power

At a briefing in Jakarta, the International Energy Agency observed encouraging progress in the Philippines' clean-energy transition, pointing to recent policy moves that attract investment. Sue-Ern Tan, who leads the IEA Regional Cooperation Centre, highlighted the Green Energy Auction Program as a key driver that has generated a list of bankable renewable projects. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the country intends to launch additional bidding rounds to secure 20,000 megawatts of new capacity by 2040, part of a broader goal to lift renewable generation to 35 percent of total electricity by 2030.

Presently, renewables account for 25 percent of the mix, with coal still providing roughly 60 percent. Tan praised the government's rapid declaration of a national energy emergency after the Middle-East crisis and its accelerated long-term planning to diversify energy sources and exploit domestic resources. The IEA view suggests the Philippines is positioning itself for a more sustainable power sector.
