IEX launches subsidiary Indian Coal Exchange, seeks licence to trade coal

Indian Energy Exchange's wholly owned unit, Indian Coal Exchange Limited, has applied to the Coal Controller Organisation for a licence to operate a physical-delivery coal trading platform.

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Indian Coal Exchange Limited, has filed an application with the Coal Controller Organisation for a trading licence. The company, set up on June 1 with a ₹100 crore authorised share capital, intends to run a physical-delivery coal exchange that uses a digital platform to match buyers and sellers. Under the Coal Exchange Rules, 2026, the exchange would operate at specific delivery points, helping to establish transparent pricing and wider access for market participants.

This initiative marks IEX Group’s entry into the coal market, complementing its existing electricity exchange, the Indian Gas Exchange (IGX), and its I-REC services. IEX, listed on the NSE and BSE since 2017, is regulated by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Why it matters

The licence could create a regulated coal market in India, improving price transparency and expanding IEX's energy-trading footprint.
