IFR may compel Manchester City owner to divest over alleged rule breaches

IFR regulator warned that Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan could be forced to sell Manchester City if investigations find the club was run improperly.

In a recent podcast, Kogan said the independent football regulator IFR could order a sale of Manchester City if the club's management is deemed unsuitable, unfair or incorrect. The club has been cited for more than 100 violations of Premier League financial rules between 2009 and 2018, though no penalty has yet been imposed. Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the Emirati sheikh, remains the majority shareholder. IFR was established after a new UK football oversight law took effect in 2025 to safeguard economic stability in the sport.

Why it matters

A forced sale could reshape ownership of one of football's richest clubs and set a precedent for financial governance.
