IIIT Ranchi student found dead in hostel, authorities launch suicide probe
A first-year student at IIIT Ranchi died by suicide in his hostel room, prompting a police investigation and student protests for better counselling.
Deputy superintendent of police Sanjeev Besra reported that a first-year student from Bihar was discovered dead by suicide in a locked hostel room at the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Ranchi, on Saturday night. The hostel was sealed, and a forensic team secured the student's mobile phone and personal belongings before the body was dispatched to RIMS Ranchi for a post-mortem examination. Students on campus have launched a protest, calling for enhanced counselling and medical facilities, arguing that timely support could have prevented the tragedy.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, represented by former chairperson Priyank Kanoongo, has taken cognizance of the incident and will investigate potential delays in medical care and administrative lapses. Police are recording statements from students to determine whether examination stress or other factors contributed to the death, while the Education Ministry and law-enforcement agencies are expected to receive directives from the commission.
Why it matters
The death highlights mental-health risks for students and raises questions about campus support services.
