IIT Bombay suicide probe shifted to Crime Branch after parents delay body claim

A 20-year-old IIT Bombay student, Sahil Wakode, was discovered dead in his campus hostel, prompting an FIR for abetment of suicide under the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Prevention of Atrocities Act after his parents alleged caste-based harassment. The complaint names a senior professor and other senior officials. The parents, Ravindra and Sonali Wakode, refused to claim the body from Rajawadi Hospital for over seven hours, insisting on arrests before proceeding with rites.

Senior IPS officers intervened, assuring action and eventually securing the body’s release around 9 p.m. The case was then transferred to a crime-branch ACP for further investigation. IIT Bombay pledged full cooperation and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy as the probe continues.
