IIT Kanpur secures ₹4,155 crore toward ₹5,000 crore fundraising goal

IIT Kanpur launched its "Greater Than Us" campaign and has already received pledges of ₹4,155 crore toward a ₹5,000 crore target by 2029.

IIT Kanpur unveiled the "Greater Than Us" fundraising initiative, securing ₹4,155 crore in commitments toward a ₹5,000 crore target set for 2029, the largest campaign ever undertaken by an IIT. The launch, performed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at Bharat Mandapam, is structured around three pillars: Foundation for infrastructure, Talent for scholarships and faculty, and Frontier for cutting-edge research, with the Frontier pillar already exceeding its ₹1,000 crore goal.

Director Manindra Agrawal said the institute expects to meet the overall target by early next year, drawing support from alumni, corporate donors and government sources. Planned projects include a ₹524 crore central research facility, a high-performance computing centre, advanced semiconductor labs, new student hostels, faculty housing and a mental-health centre. The campaign focuses on seven strategic areas—artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, drone technology, medical technologies, sustainability, semiconductors and quantum technologies—to build indigenous capabilities. A memorandum with alumnus Rahul Gautam secured ₹180 crore to establish the Gautam School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which will launch an MBA in Technology and Entrepreneurship in July 2027.

Why it matters

The massive funding will boost India's research capacity and self-reliance in critical technologies.
