IITs to establish dedicated mental-health staff for students, faculty and staff

The Indian Institutes of Technology are planning a permanent cadre of mental-health professionals to serve students, teachers and campus workers, a proposal that has been under discussion for at least two years.

Amid heightened scrutiny after multiple student suicides at IIT campuses, the Indian Institutes of Technology are moving to set up a dedicated mental-health cadre covering students, faculty and staff. Directors of two IITs emphasized that the idea has been in deliberation for at least two years and is not merely a response to recent tragedies. The initiative calls for permanent posts for counsellors, clinical psychologists and psychiatrists, with specific budget allocations to make such appointments possible.

The proposal was earlier submitted to former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and IIT Gandhinagar is drafting a structure that aligns with Rehabilitation Council of India standards. Minutes from the IIT Council indicate the framework will include promotion pathways and periodic quality assessments. A Supreme Court-appointed National Task Force reported that 90% of faculty lack training to handle mental-health issues, underscoring the need for the new cadre. Several IITs have already introduced complementary measures such as blackout evenings, peer-support campaigns and campus-wide wellness apps.

Why it matters
