Illinois Democrat quits House accountability panel amid ethics controversy

State Rep. Tracy Katz Muhl has left the Illinois House’s workplace-culture working group, which was formed after Rep. Harry Benton’s harassment case.

In response to sexual-harassment allegations involving former Rep. Harry Benton, House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch established a “workplace culture and accountability” working group. The panel’s creation followed Benton’s resignation and sparked scrutiny of Welch’s initial response and his financial backing of Benton’s reelection bid. This month, Rep. Tracy Katz Muhl announced her withdrawal from the group, marking the third Democrat to exit.

At a Republican Day event on the Illinois State Fairgrounds, Minority Leader Tony McCombie criticized the self-policing model and called for an independent third-party process, noting that even Governor J.B. Pritzker has expressed doubts about the investigation’s adequacy. Welch’s office declined to comment, and no details have been released about the group’s meetings or recommendations. The dispute highlights ongoing tensions over ethics oversight within the Illinois legislature.

Why it matters

The exit underscores partisan disputes over how Illinois handles internal harassment complaints and legislative ethics.
