Illinois district accused of hiding transgender student’s overnight room assignment from parents

A legal group alleges that Community High School District 128 placed a male student in a dorm room with female students while concealing the student’s transgender status from parents.

Liberty Justice Center’s letter claims Community High School District 128 in northern Illinois requires staff to allocate dormitory rooms according to students’ gender identity while prohibiting disclosure of a student’s transgender status. The policy allegedly led to a male student being assigned to share a room with female students without parental notification. The district, which enrolls between 3,300 and 3,500 pupils at Libertyville High School and Vernon Hills High School, permits single-bed arrangements for an additional fee.

The letter argues the rules violate parents’ 14th Amendment rights, staff’s First Amendment rights, and female students’ Title IX protections. It also notes that curricula and library collections must include gender-affirming material without an opt-out option. Citing recent Supreme Court cases, the group says parents may pursue litigation if the policies are not changed.
