Illinois releases over 500 detained immigrants despite ICE requests, sparking sanctuary debate
Illinois and Chicago authorities freed more than 500 undocumented immigrants, ignoring ICE detainer requests, including individuals charged with serious offenses.
A Republican-led House Judiciary Committee report, documents that Illinois and Chicago officials released more than 500 undocumented individuals rather than comply with ICE detainers between 2024 and 2026. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office alone released 408 immigrants in 2025, and the Chicago Police Department received 1,136 detainer requests but transferred none. State and local releases encompassed persons later charged with murder, domestic battery, firearms offenses and other violent crimes.
The report links these actions to sanctuary legislation signed by Governor JB Pritzker in 2021 and reinforced by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s Welcoming City Ordinance. Former acting ICE director Jonathan Fahey suggested tying federal funding to cooperation as a possible remedy. The findings arrive amid ongoing congressional efforts, such as Sen. John Cornyn’s Sanctuary City Elimination Act, to curb sanctuary policies.
Why it matters
It shows how sanctuary policies can allow potentially dangerous immigrants to remain free, influencing public safety and immigration debates.
