Illinois relies on five newcomers to anchor key positions in season opener

Five incoming players—quarterback Katin Houser, receiver Jayshon Platt, cornerback Jakwon Morris, left tackle Martin and hybrid defender Holmes—are set to start for Illinois against UAB.

Illinois faces UAB in its 2026 season debut with a roster dominated by newcomers, and five players are expected to fill pivotal roles. Quarterback Katin Houser inherits the most critical position on a team that has run its offensive coordinator's system for three years. Wide receiver Jayshon Platt, a transfer from Florida Atlantic, arrives with 46 receptions, 720 yards and five touchdowns, and will also handle kick returns.

Cornerback Jakwon Morris, ranked the top junior-college cornerback in his class, secures the last spot in a largely returning secondary. Left tackle Martin, who started all 12 games at Colorado State, will anchor the offensive line opposite Knapik, and Holmes will operate in a hybrid defensive line/linebacker capacity to enhance the Illini's pass rush.

Why it matters

The newcomers will shape Illinois' performance in a season where experience is scarce.
