Since 2020, the Illinois State Police maintained an online map that listed roughly 30,000 people classified as “offenders” associated with nursing homes across the state, revealing full names, dates of birth, home addresses, phone numbers, FBI identifiers and Social Security numbers. The map was uncovered by a researcher who highlighted the ease with which the information could be accessed for malicious purposes. In response to the exposure, the police agency deleted the map, stating it originated from an internal pilot data source and was never intended for public distribution.
The agency is now working to inform those whose data appeared on the site. Critics argue the release shows a lack of proper security safeguards for sensitive personal information held by law-enforcement agencies.
