IMD predicts northeast monsoon to hit southern India within three days
The India Meteorological Department says the northeast monsoon will reach the southern peninsula in the next 2-3 days, bringing heavy rain from Oct 15-18.
In its latest daily outlook, the India Meteorological Department expects the northeast monsoon to arrive over the southern peninsula within the next two to three days, initiating a prolonged wet period. Isolated heavy rainfall is projected for Kerala, Mahe, coastal and interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and coastal Andhra Pradesh from Oct 15-18, while north interior Karnataka may see rain on Oct 17-18 and Rayalaseema on Oct 15-16.
The forecast adds that the southwest monsoon is still receding from the rest of the country. This rain spell, likely to persist for five to six days, will aid rabi crop growth but also raises flood concerns. The department linked one outlet rainfall shortfall to a strengthening El Niño, which the World Meteorological Organization expects to peak in December 2026 and continue into early 2027.
