IMF mission to Senegal scheduled for late August to discuss new loan framework

IMF officials will travel to Senegal from August 19 to September 1 to continue talks on a potential new financing arrangement.

The International Monetary Fund disclosed that a team of its staff will visit Senegal from August 19 through September 1 to deepen negotiations on a prospective lending programme. This follows a June mission that described the technical discussions on Senegal's new programme request as open and constructive. Senegal's newly elected leadership revealed a debt-misreporting problem in 2024, prompting the IMF to suspend its earlier $1.8 billion loan arrangement.

Since then, the West African nation has been largely excluded from international capital markets and has turned to regional sources for financing. In its statement, the Fund reiterated its commitment to help Senegal maintain macroeconomic stability and promote sustainable, inclusive growth. The upcoming talks aim to outline the reforms and policy measures required for any future support.

Why it matters

The talks could restore Senegal's access to global financing and support its economic stability.
