IMF says global economy stays resilient six months into Iran conflict

The IMF noted that, despite six months of war in Iran, the world economy has held up but uncertainty remains high.

During a Thursday press conference, IMF spokesperson Julie Kozack reported that the global economy has remained surprisingly resilient after six months of war in Iran, particularly handling energy price spikes better than feared. Nonetheless, she warned that overall uncertainty stays elevated. Kozack described a split dynamic: a negative supply shock from higher energy and commodity costs contrasted with a positive demand shock driven by the artificial-intelligence technology wave, affecting nations differently.

She also flagged lingering threats, including an extended energy shock, rising sovereign debt levels and a stalled disinflation process. The IMF and World Bank Group will convene their 2026 Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, where Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva plans to focus on resilience and dynamism. The statements underscore the delicate balance policymakers must manage amid ongoing geopolitical tension.
