IMF says Sri Lanka's economy remains resilient but downside risks linger

The IMF reported that Sri Lanka's economy continues to show resilience despite ongoing risks, as it concludes a staff visit.

The International Monetary Fund completed a staff visit to Sri Lanka and affirmed that the island nation's economy is holding up amid successive shocks, though vulnerabilities remain. Backed by a $2.9 billion assistance programme, Sri Lanka is working to recover from the 2022 dollar shortage crisis. The IMF highlighted persistent downside risks, especially from soaring energy prices that have followed the Gulf conflict.

Key priorities identified include developing a robust medium-term revenue strategy, ensuring energy cost recovery, and advancing capital investment. The fund also recommended maintaining the 5 percent inflation target and upholding accountability measures, stressing that sustained structural reforms are essential for inclusive growth.

Why it matters
