IMF warns AI-powered cyberattacks could cripple global finance

The International Monetary Fund cautions that AI-driven cyber threats could halt critical financial services worldwide.

The IMF’s latest stability assessment warns that artificial-intelligence-based cyberattacks pose a serious danger to the worldwide financial infrastructure, potentially shutting down payment networks and denying users access to bank accounts. The report cites that in 70% of recorded cases, software providers could not remediate flaws before hackers struck, making containment difficult. This assessment mirrors warnings from Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey about finance’s increasing systemic cyber risk.

The Fund also flagged the possibility of AI-driven market manipulation, noting recent spikes in UK gilt and US Treasury yields and stress in French bond markets. While markets have remained resilient so far, the IMF stresses that complacency could exacerbate fiscal imbalances and debt-driven speculation. The warning was issued during the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, where chief Kristalina Georgieva described AI as a slow-moving tsunami reshaping jobs and economies.
