Kanishka Narayan, the sole Old Etonian in Burnham’s cabinet, has been appointed Britain’s first dedicated minister for artificial intelligence.
Kanishka Narayan, the only Old Etonian serving in Prime Minister Burnham’s cabinet, has been named Britain’s inaugural minister for artificial intelligence. Born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, he moved to Cardiff at 12, lived in a one-bedroom flat, and later won a full bursary to Eton before studying PPE at Balliol, Oxford. After stints in the civil service, Lazard, a Stanford MBA and venture-capital roles, he was elected MP for the Vale of Glamorgan, becoming Wales’s first ethnic-minority MP.
Following the collapse of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, Narayan will operate at Cabinet level without a dedicated department, reporting jointly to the Cabinet Office and the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, while the AI Taskforce also answers to Dame Antonia Romeo and Lord Vallance. His responsibilities span AI strategy, semiconductor policy, robotics, the AI Security Institute, sovereign AI and public-sector AI adoption, and he recently highlighted a UK-Ukraine AI lab partnership as “AI sovereignty in practice”.
