Incheon suspect appears for arrest warrant hearing after knife attack injures eight
A 59-year-old man accused of stabbing eight people at an Incheon shopping centre attended an arrest-warrant hearing at the Incheon District Court.
On Friday, a 59-year-old man charged with attempting to kill ten shoppers using knives affixed to both hands attended an arrest-warrant hearing at the Incheon District Court. Prosecutors requested the warrant on grounds of attempted murder and illegal possession of weapons in public. The Tuesday assault at a commercial complex west of Seoul injured eight people, with one victim remaining unconscious after cardiac arrest, while two escaped unharmed.
Authorities linked the motive to the suspect’s frustration over medical care at a nearby hospital, where he had conducted a 2½-month solo protest that led the facility to report him for weapon possession. The man carries ten prior convictions, two of which involve attempted murder. He expressed remorse, saying “I am sorry,” as he walked to the hearing. The court was slated to deliver its decision later that day.
Why it matters
The hearing determines whether the attacker will be detained pending trial for a violent public assault.
