Income Tax probes reveal reporting gaps in over 35,000 high-value Gurugram property deals
A tax department survey in Badshahpur, Gurugram uncovered more than 35,000 property transactions worth roughly ₹55,000 crore that were either unreported or filed with incorrect PAN details.
In a recent audit of Badshahpur tehsil in Gurugram, the Income Tax Department’s I&CI directorate identified over 35,000 high-value property deals, collectively valued at about ₹55,000 crore, that suffer from reporting deficiencies. The investigation matched state land-registry entries against the Statements of Financial Transactions submitted by Tehsildars and Naib Tehsildars, revealing numerous omissions and incorrect PAN numbers.
Such gaps impede tax authorities from matching property transactions with individuals' income-tax records, prompting a deeper probe into possible deliberate misreporting. The findings echo earlier surveys across Haryana, where senior officials have been urged to correct the lapses. Despite a deadline of May 31 for filing SFTs, only around 45 of the state’s 140 Tehsildars complied, a sharp decline from the previous year. The department has asked the Haryana government to ensure pending filings are completed and erroneous details corrected, highlighting the broader implications for the fast-growing Gurugram real-estate market.
Why it matters
Accurate reporting of high-value property sales is essential for tax compliance and transparency in India's booming real-estate sector.
