Incumbent Mayors Defeated Across Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area in Election Upset

Several long-standing mayors in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area lost their re-election bids, while others secured sizable victories.

Election night in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area produced a wave of surprises, with numerous incumbent mayors being unseated. In Hamilton, former NDP leader Andrea Horwath trailed far behind Rob Cooper and Keanin Loomis, the latter announcing his victory after previously losing to Horwath in 2022. Milton’s long-serving mayor Gord Krantz was outpolled by George Minakakis, and Oakville’s five-term mayor Rob Burton finished third as Jeff Knoll led the vote.

Mississauga’s incumbent Carolyn Parrish also lost to city councillor Alvin Tedjo. Meanwhile, incumbents such as Olivia Chow in Toronto, Patrick Brown in Brampton, Steven Del Duca in Vaughan, David West in Richmond Hill and Frank Scarpitti in Markham retained their positions with major majorities.
