Independent garages struggle to service electric vehicles due to data access limits

Many independent garages are unable to service EVs and plug-in hybrids because they lack access to manufacturers' diagnostic data, forcing them to refer customers to franchised dealers.

Data from LKQ Euro Car Parts indicates that a significant number of independent garages have been compelled to refuse or refer work on electric and plug-in hybrid cars because they cannot obtain the necessary diagnostic information. Manufacturers often restrict fault-code access and technical manuals to brand-specific channels, leaving local mechanics unable to identify problems. As a result, drivers are steered toward franchised dealerships that have the required proprietary equipment.

Garage owner Mark Cranmer of Station Garage in Hyde, Greater Manchester, highlighted the challenge of staying competitive as vehicle technology evolves. Over a quarter of independent shops say these diagnostic barriers are deterring further investment in EV services. The UK’s SERMI scheme offers a route to essential security-related data, but broader access remains limited.

Why it matters

Limited diagnostic access threatens the viability of independent garages and could raise service costs for EV owners.
