India adds 405 defence components to indigenisation list, targeting Rs 3,070 crore in local production
The Department of Defence Production issued its sixth positive indigenisation list, adding 405 defence items that must now be sourced from Indian manufacturers, creating roughly Rs 3,070 crore of business.
India's Department of Defence Production announced the sixth positive indigenisation list, introducing 405 additional weapons, platforms, subsystems and components that must be produced locally rather than imported, representing an estimated Rs 3,070 crore market for domestic firms. The catalogue includes line-replaceable units for aircraft such as the Advanced Light Helicopter and Su-30MKI, tank families like the T-72, T-90 and BMP-II, missile systems including the Konkurs-M and MRSAM, and a suite of radars, sonars, fire-control and satellite communications gear.
An indicative schedule accompanies each item, after which procurement will shift to Indian industry via the Make procedure of defence public-sector undertakings, with MSMEs expected to contribute significantly. Since the SRIJAN Defence Portal launched in August 2020, over 33,000 items have been offered for indigenisation, of which more than 15,700 have already been domestically sourced, saving roughly Rs 9,000 crore in imports and prompting procurement orders of about Rs 10,000 crore to local vendors. This latest batch reinforces the Aatmanirbhar Bharat strategy, though its success will hinge on the ability of smaller firms to scale up capacity.
Why it matters
The list aims to reduce India's defence imports and boost local industry, affecting jobs and strategic self-reliance.
