India advances Census 2027 count in four election-bound states to avoid overlap
The government has shifted the Census 2027 field work in Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand and Punjab to November-December, ahead of the states' scheduled elections.
According to a Gazette order, the Registrar General of India has moved the Census 2027 enumeration in Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Punjab and non-snowbound Uttarakhand to the period December 1, 2026 through January 4, 2027, followed by a short revision round from January 5 to 9. The reference date for these states is now set at 00:00 hours on January 5, 2027. A self-enumeration facility will be available online between November 16 and November 30, just before enumerators begin door-to-door visits.
The advance timing is intended to free up personnel, many of whom are teachers or state staff, for the state assembly elections slated for early 2027. The rest of the country will still conduct its census in February, while Ladakh and snow-bound areas of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand follow separate schedules. In a related development, the census in Manipur remains deferred pending further announcement.
