India advises nationals in Italy to steer clear of protest hotspots amid unrest

The Indian embassy in Italy has warned Indian citizens to avoid crowded protest areas after violent demonstrations over cost-of-living grievances.

The Embassy of India in Rome issued a safety advisory for Indian nationals in Italy, urging them to avoid crowded locations and protest sites and to keep abreast of local news, with emergency numbers for the embassy and the Consulate General in Milan. The guidance was prompted by recent unrest in Milan, Bologna, Brescia, Bergamo and Turin, where protesters angry about rising living costs and inadequate public services confronted police.

Law enforcement deployed tear gas and water cannons and arrested dozens of participants. More than 60 protesters were taken to a police station for further checks in Milan, while a total of 28 arrests were recorded across the northern cities. The disturbances echo similar large-scale protests in neighboring France, underscoring growing economic discontent in the region.

Why it matters

Indian travelers and residents in Italy need to follow the advisory to stay safe amid escalating protests.
