India aims to become major exporter to China and ASEAN, says Commerce Minister
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said India expects to become a leading exporter of goods and services to China and the ASEAN region in the coming years.
During a two-day official trip, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said India aims to emerge as a major supplier of goods and services to both China and the ten ASEAN countries. He referenced recent talks with his Chinese counterpart in Yaounde, Cameroon, and in New Delhi during the BRICS summit, emphasizing a commitment to free and fair trade. Goyal highlighted that China supplies important intermediate goods, but India will use established judicial processes if pricing is unfair.
He pointed to a 36.62% increase in Indian exports to China in 2025-26, while the trade deficit grew to $99.19 billion. The minister also mentioned India's tightened foreign direct investment policy for bordering countries and said the government will address China's new export restrictions on tunnel-boring machines, which could affect domestic infrastructure projects.
Why it matters
India's push to boost exports to China and ASEAN could narrow its trade deficit and reshape regional supply chains.
