India aims to launch its inaugural mineral exchange by FY28

A senior mines ministry official said India plans to register and start its first electronic mineral exchange by the next financial year.

India is set to create its first electronic mineral exchange, a delivery-based trading system designed to bring transparency and market-driven pricing to the sector. The Ministry of Mines released the Mineral Exchange Rules in June, and Veena Kumari Dermal, the mines additional secretary, confirmed that registration of the exchange is in progress and that it should be up and running by the next financial year. The platform will standardize quality assessment, offer risk-management mechanisms and aim to prevent market manipulation.

By providing a competitive marketplace, it seeks to narrow the information gap between producers and buyers and lessen the country's reliance on mineral imports, which amounted to ₹10,12,000 crore in FY25-26. The move aligns with the broader goal of building a self-reliant economy under the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

Why it matters

A domestic mineral exchange could lower import costs and boost India's strategic resource security.
